Day 1: Muscat/Salalah Transfer to the Salalah Hilton for an afternoon at leisure relaxing beside the hotel's splendid pool with its island features, stocked with plants and shrubs, and lovely beach of white sand. Overnight on B&B basis.
Day 2: Ubar and the Empty Quarter The archaeological site of Ubar, a former walled city destroyed by earthquake, is our first destination. To reach this former centre for trade in frankincense we drive north, via the Dhofar escarpment, the town of Thumrait and pyramidal hillocks of the Nejd area. After a picnic lunch at Ubar the exciting drive continues across flat desert until the yellow shapes of the vast dunes of Rub Al Khali, or Empty Quarter, appear on the horizon. When the engine is turned off you can hear a pin drop - there is nothing, not a soul in sight as far as the eye can see. Camp is set up in a sheltered depression half way up a spectacular, high dune where the driver/guide prepares dinner at sunset. A quite unforgettable experience.
Day 3: Full day desert and wadi Rise early to watch the sun casting its pinky glow over the vast expanse of mountainous, virgin dunes rising straight out of the desert. Return to Salalah through the beautiful Wadi Sahanwoot. Overnight: Hilton Salalah.
