Dubai

A taste of Arabia in ultra modern surroundings, stunning luxury hotels, superb sporting facilities, duty-free shopping, year round sunshine and splendid sandy beaches

Dubai is the best known of the seven, 'city states' comprising the United Arab Emirates, on the southern shores of the Arabian Gulf, at the crossroads of Africa, Asia and Europe. Here, modern cities boasting breathtaking, futuristic architecture spring straight out of harsh desert landscapes, still home to dwindling numbers of nomadic Bedouin tribes; here, too, ancient, 'souks' vie for trade with luxurious shopping malls and camel races take place in sight of six lane motorways. Islam remains the single most powerful cultural influence despite the impact of oil revenues which have changed the region for ever.

Visitors to Dubai will find a modern city and a clean, safe environment with a wealth of superb hotels providing top class sporting and recreational facilities and excellent duty free shopping. Add to this splendid beaches and virtually guaranteed sunshine year-round and it's easy to see why more and more people are being drawn to the Gulf, both for short winter sun breaks and main holidays.

Dubai Creek This is the focal point of Dubai and the hub of all trading activity. Colourful wooden dhows line the banks of the creek, a seawater inlet that winds its way through the heart of the city, to transport goods throughout Arabia, to India and East Africa in time-honoured fashion.

Desert Safaris Only a short distance from each sophisticated metropolis, the magic of the ever present desert can be experienced by taking a short escorted tour in 4x4 vehicles, to admire the mysterious emptiness of the endless desert and dunes.

Hatta An ancient fortified village set in a lush oasis, amid superb desert and mountain scenery, less than two hours' drive from Dubai. Visit the old fort, the Juma mosque and Wadi Hatta with its abundant vegetation and varied wildlife.

Fujairah On the shores of the Indian Ocean Fujairah nestles in the shadow of the magnificent Hajar mountains. Explore the gorges, wadis and timeless mountain villages of the interior, and the palm groves, small fishing communities and ancient fortresses of the coastal strip.

Al Ain Located near the border with Oman, this is another excellent centre for exploring the surrounding desert. Climb the giant red sand dunes and wander round the local camel market, the last of its kind in the UAE.

Shopping From traditional souks to exclusive shopping malls and arcades, Dubai is a shoppers' paradise. From Persian rugs and fabulous hand-made silks from the Far East to the very latest in electronic gadgetry, there's something for everyone here! Don't miss the Gold Souk, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, where beautiful, hand-crafted gold and silver jewellery abounds.

Sport and Recreation Foremost among these is golf - Dubai boasts six principal courses (one floodlit) - and racing (camels as well as horses!). Other popular activities include tennis, deep sea fishing, scuba diving and a host of watersports.
